Inner Light Ministries in Soquel is installing a water neutral lawn for the children’s playground area. Through the use of drought tolerant native grasses, rainwater catchment, and subsurface irrigation, the lawn will be beautifully maintained
without using any municipal water.

 Come learn how you can have a guilt-free lawn for you or your clients.

Calming the Storm: Strategies and Tools for Easing the Stormwater Design and Permitting Process

Calling all architects, engineers, landscape professionals, local government staff, stormwater professionals, property managers and owners, land use planners, developers, contractors and construction managers! This all day workshop will help smooth the stormwater design and permit process by bringing together local professionals and agency staff to share strategies and tools for improving the permit process. Come gain new insights and design solutions, learn the benefits of using Low Impact Development (LID), get lessons from the planning desk with local agency staff, and see local examples of LID projects that meet the new post-construction requirements.

Registration is REQUIRED. The cost of the workshop is $15.00 and includes a light breakfast and bagged lunch. 

Funding for the event is through a Proposition 84 Stormwater grant awarded to the County of Santa Cruz. This grant also includes funding for four demonstration projects that include good stormater management examples, outreach and education, and tours of the funded projects.

Blue Circle Meeting: Reining in the Rain

It's that time again. Blue Circle 2015 is just around the corner.

The meetings theme is Reining in the Rain: Stormwater as a Resource.

Discussions include:

  • Managed Aquifer Recharge in Santa Cruz County - Dr. Andy Fisher, University of California Santa Cruz
  • County of Santa Cruz Community Stormwater Survey - Manu Koenig, Civinomics
  • Sustainable Groundwater Management Act - Ron Duncun, Soquel Creek Water District

     

In 1996, the Resource Conservation District of Santa Cruz County and the Natural Resources Conservation Service created the first Blue Circle as a way for local agencies, governmental and non-governmental groups to meet in a social climate and exchange views on natural resource issues in Santa Cruz County’s watersheds. The Blue Circle is plain and simple:
“People having fun with watersheds.”

As always, food and drinks will be provided.

Water Tour: Heart of Soquel Park & Soquel Creek Water District Garden

Educational Water Tour with the Resource Conservation District, Coastal Watershed Council, County of Santa Cruz and Soquel Creek Water District

Come learn how landscape features at the brand new Heart of Soquel Park improve water quality and promote groundwater infiltration while providing a beautiful and functional public space. This is a great opportunity to see pervious concrete & pavers, bio-swales and more in this gem located in downtown Soquel along Soquel Creek. From there it’s a short walk up Soquel Drive to the Soquel Creek Water District where we’ll check out their rain garden project, installed in 2009, and learn about their 2,850 gallon rainwater catchment tank used for irrigation, and underground water infiltration facility. Get maintenance tips on caring for these features.

The Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History, in partnership with the Santa Cruz Bird Club, invites you to join in our wonderful birding series along the San Lorenzo River. The San Lorenzo River has over two hundred bird species known to migrate through or live on the river. Expert birders from the Santa Cruz Bird Club will be guiding these early morning workshops, open to families and bird lovers of all ages.

FREE Admission. Pre-Registration required, space limited.
All programs run 8:30-10:30am.
