Fire Safety Workshop and Tour

Topics to be presented by Cal Fire and the Santa Cruz County Equine Evacuation Unit include:

The vision of the SLRA is to create a thriving Santa Cruz riverfront through the work of an engaged team of governmental agencies, local businesses nonprofits and stakeholders.

The community should be proud of your river and feel connected to it as a safe, natural space. Join us at these upcoming Community Forums to share your vision for the San Lorenzo River. Your thoughts and ideas will help shape the work and the priorities of the San Lorenzo River Alliance as, together, we work to achieve healthier habitat, increased community access and a renewed sense of pride. Rural Roads and Rain Barrels Workshop

"Rural Roads and Rain Barrels" is a FREE workshop for residents of the Santa Cruz Mountains interested in tips and practical solutions for private road maintenance, drainage and erosion control, water conservation, and fire protection. There will also be information on free technical assistance, grant, and rebates that are available to homeowners. The workshop is put on by the RCD and co-sponsored by the Valley Women's Club of San Lorenzo Valley, San Lorenzo Valley Water District, Scotts Valley Water District, and Cal Fire. Please RSVP as space is limited. Light snacks and drinks will be served.

PLEASE NOTE: The location was moved from Felton Community Hall to the Felton Fire Station.

Irrigation Management Efficiency and Water Conservation in Nurseries

California’s current drought is imposing significant impacts on California agriculture. This program provides basic information and practical solutions for improving irrigation efficiency to make the best use of available irrigation water. There will be morning presentations and an afternoon field trip to various sites demonstrating principles and practices. Monterey Bay Greenhouse Growers Open House

Come visit the beautiful blooms of the Monterey Bay and stop by the RCD info table at Kitayama Brothers!  Ever wonder what beauty lies behind the glass in a greenhouse?  Now’s your chance during the 5th Annual Monterey Bay Greenhouse Growers Open House on June 21st!  There will be an array of flowers, herbs, and plants to see ranging from orchids and roses to gerberas, succulents, edible herbs and more while touring these Monterey Bay farms.  Enjoy these guided tours with the growers themselves as you learn about growing CA GROWN flowers, herbs, and plants for commercial purposes.  Information will include several areas such as propagation, fertilizing, pest control, harvesting, etc.  We recommend you wear comfortable shoes and layered clothing as many of these tours will involve walking through greenhouses or growing areas and vary in temperatures.  This event is FREE and open to the public thanks to our sponsors. Laundry to Landscape Installation Workshop

Learn how to  install a laundry to landscape irrigation system to water your garden by reusing your clothes washer’s rinse water. This workshop will be half classroom and half hands-on in-field experiential learning.  Space is limited and registration is required!

Please note: The Workshop starts at 9am, but please arrive by 8:45am to check in!
Classroom Instruction  – 9:00 am – noon

  • Greywater compatible products and plants
  • Greywater parts and materials identification
  • Calculating irrigation field size and plant water requirements
  • Mulch basin construction
  • Creating  a design for your system
  • Maintaining your greywater system

Lunch: 12:00 – 1 pm Travel to the workshop installation site to eat lunch. Don’t forget to bring a lunch, sunscreen, and a water bottle!
Hands-on Installation Practice 1- 4pm
Learn from the pros and gain hands-on experience installing a laundry to landscape system at a workshop participant’s home.
